The picture on the right is a representative sample of Eddie Van Halen’s signature guitar, affectionately known as Frankenstrat. On the left we see a photo of an ugly new Nike trainer. Apparently, Eddie doesn’t like the new shoe because he’s suing Nike for copyright infringement. In fact, Eddie wants “damages, confiscation of profits, and the seizure and destruction of the entire run of shoes.” Damn.
Maybe Eddie has a point. Regardless, it strikes me as funny to see Van Halen in the news because of a cranky lawsuit. I mean, that’s all we ever hear from Van Halen anymore. Did you know they went on tour last year with Dave? I barely knew about it, and that’s because I stumbled upon it, like I stumbled upon this. Naw, the only time you ever hear about VH anymore is because Eddie is cranky about something.
I used to love Van Halen. They were my favorite band from the ages of 12 to about 17. Frankly they were the perfect band for a growing adolescent male. “Uncle Sammy, how do I know when it’s love?” “I can’t tell you, but it lasts forever.” Wow, deep. That shit may have worked on a 15 year old, but it sure as hell doesn’t work on a college kid that has discovered…you know…things. What does work is the raw, hard rock and excitement of their early records. I still love the Dave years and always will. There were no apologies for anything. They rolled into your town, conquered, slept with all of the women, ate all the food, and moved to the next town to do it all over. They were awesome.
Now they’re the cranky man across the street yelling at the kids to stay off the lawn. Sad.
Let’s put all of this nonsense out of our minds and enjoy classic VH from 1982!
